Key aspects of our program At St. George's our goal is to deliver programming that provides children with: - a safe and inviting place that children enjoy attending
- the opportunity to explore, question and nurture their faith while sharing the issues and thoughts that matter to them in their daily lives
- the opportunity to meet and make new friends of all ages
- a community where they can work with others on Outreach projects and realize the impact they can have, regardless of their age, in helping others.
Involving the youth of our congregation (Grade 7 and up) is also an important part of our Sunday school. Our youth are key members of our volunteer team providing support such as assisting in classrooms, preparing our "feast", organizing supplies, and working individually with children. How Sunday School Works Sunday School is offered during the 10:00 a.m. service of Worship from September to June. Children begin each Sunday in church with their family, participate in the beginning of the service and move downstairs after a short children's focus. Once in the church hall all children gather together for approximately 20 minutes to listen to, and discuss, the week's story and to share in a short music program. Our program year is broken down into three to four week sessions, devoted to a theme or story. Some examples would be Jesus Feeds the Thousands, the Christmas story, People of the Bible, Pentecost etc. For the first two or three weeks of the theme-session, the children break into groups by age/grade and work with a teacher on age appropriate activities to reinforce the story's learnings. During the last 15 minutes of Sunday School all the children gather again as a group to share in a prayer followed by a snack or "feast". (All drinks and cookies/snacks served are nut free). On the final Sunday of the theme-session we review the story/theme, then the children go to all-ages activity stations (eg. Crafts, painting, modeling clay) for "free play". On these Sundays, the children return to the worship service in time to join their families for communion and the remainder of the service. Adults and Teachers at Sunday School Our Sunday School program is led by a dedicated team of Sunday School Coordinators who plan and organize the program for the year, and lead the initial opening and story time activities. The coordinators are supported by a group of Sunday School teachers who work together to team-teach the children in their class time. Our goal is to have three teachers for each age group. The teachers are scheduled in a rotation, so they only teach two to three weeks in a row, then they have four to six Sundays "off". Little or no experience is required to join our team of teachers. All that is required is enthusiasm and a love for children and having fun.We choose curriculum and design our program to allow our volunteers to grow along with the children. Most of our teachers say they learn more from teaching Sunday school than they did attending years before!!! Our Sunday School music leader is an important part of the team. The children are led in music every week for about 10 minutes, learning new songs and practicing old favourites. |
