Waterloo Deanery Refugee Project

Our Newcomer Family, A Progress Report

We are pleased to report that Lun Niang and her three daughters are progressing very well under the loving tutelage of our Settlement Assistance Team and community friends and neighbours.

They all attend school daily and report that they are enjoying it very much and doing well. They love their apartment, their finances are in good order and there is only one complaint….they don't like our cold weather. Some of us aren't crazy about it either but considering our blessings we wouldn't trade it for anything.

A number of activities are being considered. We have some surplus donated furniture and are considering a furniture fair for the Chin community. It would be held at Benton St. Baptist Church and we would welcome additional good quality donations to make the fair a worthwhile event. Please contact Jane Townshend at Holy Saviour pjtowns@gmail.com for further information..

The family will attend Palm Sunday services followed by lunch at St. James in Hespeler. In addition, our committee chair, Gail Brandt, ( St. George's, New Hamburg) will be guest speaker at St. James' breakfast prior to the 9:30 service which begins in the driveway with a donkey!

The family have attended St. George's with Margie Warren on a number of occasions, also St. John the Evangelist with Ann Kelland. Introductory visits to other deanery churches are being planned for the future.

A variety of spring and summer events are being discussed however, Lun will continue with ESL classes through the summer and this may impact on their options.

Without the dedication of our excellent Settlement Assistance Team volunteers drawn from every corner of Waterloo Deanery none of this would have been possible and we thank all those from St. George's who continue to pledge their strong support for our newcomer family.
