Pastoral Letter | May 25, 2018 Refresh and Reenergize
In this week’s pastoral letter, I would like to begin to talk to you about “Holy Holidays”. I think it’s wise to plan your holidays with some focus on “relaxation”, “refreshment”, “reenergizing” and “renewal” of relationships.
We live in an extremely busy world. Few people are deliberate about taking time to relax. There is always a long list of chores, commitments and obligations that distract us from taking the time we need to allow our bodies to restore themselves after the busy times of life.
We often forget that we need to refresh both our bodies and minds allowing the intellectual and emotional chaos to sort itself through. In addition to this, we need to be able to refocus on those things that are important to each one of us. This is a good time to ask some really significant questions. Including the following; what are the most important relationships in my life right now and am I giving those relationships the time and attention they need? Secondly, when was the last time I ate the healthiest foods available and balanced that activity with exercise? The third question is “How are things with my soul”? What do I need to do to refocus my spiritual needs?
To reenergize ourselves we may need to take our holy holidays and read a good book. Or see a movie with a significant and transformational life message. We may need to simply go for a long walk on the beach and soak up the sun and enjoy the cool breeze off the water. This might even be the time to attend a retreat or spend some time with a mentor or life coach.
A focus on the renewal of relationships could be a very enjoyable experience. This can include visiting with people that you have been thinking of for months, but never have the opportunity to see.
Jesus understood how important it was to take care of his body, mind and spirit. Our bodies are the temple of God. Therefore we need to “retreat”, “relax”, “refresh”, “reenergize” and “reengage”. Our Lord often wandered away by himself to pray, think, reflect and refocus his energy on those he had been called to be in healthy relationships with on a daily basis. I want to encourage you to take this summer to follow our Lord’s example and take especially good care of yourself.
There will come a time in early September where each of us will be required to reengage. But for now, let’s just focus on you taking care of yourself in order to regain the energy you need for yourself and the healthy relationships in your lives. It’s hard to remember that we are no good to others if we haven’t first cared for our own needs.
May God bless you in your deliberate determination for self-care this summer.
Yours in Christ
